‘Seven Ravens’ original

“Salt Spring Island vistas from country roads, this
scene is a favourite across farm fields to distant Sunset Drive and the
glistening waters on Salt Spring Island’s west side.” J

 “Seven Ravens”
Seven Ravens is a painted documentation of my walking the length of Salt Spring Island. Over a couple of years I journeyed from Southey Point to Ruckle Park, a pilgrimage of sorts, similar in spirit to my Chemin St. Jacques walk in France a few years earlier.

Every week or so I would set out for a two-hour walk in silent contemplation. I arranged for Duart to follow my route by car two hours later and pick me up. To mark the place where I would begin the following week, I tied prayer flags along the way.

For more than a year I followed this rhythm—walking roads, old paths, and forested deer trails. I passed farms, Ganges, Vesuvius, golf courses, cottages, and stretches of shoreline. Rarely meeting another person, I marvelled at the beauty of our island.

When I finally arrived at Ruckle Park, I knelt by the ocean, washing my face and hands in the salty water. In that moment I felt a blessing from my soul—a quiet completion in honouring my home island.
