"Plummed Hummingbird" Original
"Plummed Hummingbird" original painting
Original painted while travelling in Mexico.
My paintings emerge from what I am experiencing. While in Mexico, I research its rich art history, always drawn to myth, history, culture, tradition, pattern, shape, and colour.
“Plumed Hummingbird” is a playful nod to the title of D. H. Lawrence’s book “The Plumed Serpent,” inspired by the mythic figure Quetzalcoatl. Coincidentally, I am staying in the very accommodation where D. H. Lawrence wrote this book.
While researching the legend of Quetzalcoatl, I painted my own interpretation. My painting space, set outside beside a sparkling fountain, attracts hummingbirds. In my imagination I adorned this tiny creature with plumed feathers, linking it to its mighty protector—the god Quetzalcoatl.
