Living a Fairytale Life
Have you ever felt like you live in a fairytale?
Once Upon a time, on a little island, a small green jewel on a necklace of rocky dots just off a temperate ocean coast cradled by mountains, towering conifers and a gentle sea, I live.
Chosen to be home over 35years ago our small island sanctuary nourished us enough to grow creative unfoldments for many like minded inhabitants. The seeds of our beginnings fruited in ingenuity and community. Each germinating fulfilling unique contacts. We honed our craft driven by will. A community is born from necessity, driven by luck and hard work.
Our family chose this life little realizing the shaping of character from within and without that could sustain a life of living for decades on art alone.
My beginnings on SSI are really not that different from now. Each day I still marvel of the natural beauty in every vista. I swoon in the site of majestic firs, sparkling seas, narrow curvy roads travelling though surprising landscape. Past yesteryear farms, play fields, meadows of daisy’s and buttercups, villages with busy traffic from a recent ferry unload. Harbours with riff raft boats, canoes, kayaks, coast guard boats, million dollar cruisers, fish boats and seaplanes. Multiple times a day I marvel at my good fortune, my choice my life. Characters long term residents to newbies the islanders share similar attributes no matter their wealth. Summer evening music in Ganges at The TreeHouse Cafe or Oystercatcher brings out our common appreciation for fun, conversation and dance. Our days often solo in our creative pursuit.
How did I luck into such a place as Salt Spring Island. My first visit was in 1987. I look a yoga retreat at The Salt Spring Centre a grey November month. I was charmed. Several years later having sold our home in Canada to live in the South of France we immersed in a rural farming hamlet while we knew we were destined to return to Canada. It was that week long yoga retreat experience that called me to her shores. My urging brought our family from rural France and we purchased 10acres of raw land on Salt Spring Island. Listening to inner urging we stepped into a fairytale of our making.
